Poteau wrestlers pin loss on Keys (Park Hill) Cougars

January 26, 2012

PARK HILL — The Poteau Pirates wrestling team will take some momentum into this weekend's Maverick Conference Tournament.
The Pirates hung a 42-30 dual loss on the Keys (Park Hill) Cougars Tuesday night.
The Pirates (15-6 in duals this season) got pinfall wins from four wrestlers — Tyler Tustin (132 pounds), Khy Mote (152), Derek Francis (160) and Gabe Sanchez (182).
Poteau also got forfeited wins from Devin Anderson (113 pounds), Trevin Smith (170) and Luis Gonzales (220).
“It was a really big win for us as we go into a really tough tournament,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “Hopefully, we can use those things to springboard us into our (homecoming and Senior Night) dual against Fort Gibson (at 7 p.m. Jan. 31 at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse). We're now 15-6 in duals, and we have a chance at 16 dual wins this season. That would be a feather in our caps, and it's a credit to the kids. We're peaking at the right time. We've just got to do a better job in some our matches (that we're losing).”
The Pirates will be the host team for the 2012 Maverick Conference Tournament, which will take place Friday and Saturday at Carl Albert State College's Mick Thompson Fieldhouse. Action will begin at noon on both days.
