Poteau wrestlers to start season Thursday at home against Van Buren; Tuesday's season-opening dual at Quinton canceled

December 12, 2013

The Poteau Pirates wrestling team may not be at full strength yet due to several wrestlers on the football team that's going for the state title Saturday afternoon, but the ones who are out will begin their season with their home opener against the Van Buren (Ark.) Pointers at 7 p.m. Thursday at Sherman Floyd Fieldhouse. The junior high dual will begin at 6 p.m.
The Pirates, who were 11-6 last season, were to have started their season Tuesday night at Quinton, but the Savages had to cancel due to not having school that day because of the effects of last week's wintry weather. It was not known if that dual will be rescheduled for a later date.
“We're probably as tough as we were last year, but we'll be rebuilding at some weights,” Poteau second-year coach Jack Hornbuckle said. “I have five or six really good wrestlers. Once we get our football players out, we'll be ready to hook it up. The kids we have now I'd like to postpone them a week for the team aspect, but they're ready to go now.”
