Poteau wrestlers suffer loss to Vian Tuesday night

January 5, 2012

VIAN — The 2012 portion of the Poteau High School wrestling season did not get started the way the Pirates had hoped as they lost a 60-15 dual decision to the Vian Wolverines Tuesday night.
Sequoyah-Tahlequah was to have made it a triangular but did not show up.
The Pirates (9-5 in duals this season) got three wins, two of which were by pins coming from Tyler Tustin (126 pounds) and Daylon Brewton (heavyweight). Poteau's other win came on a decision by Chevy Galetka in his match at 170 pounds.
“I just don't think we competed very well,” second-year Poteau Coach Chris Barbee said. “They're really a tough opponent. They're ranked No. 3 in (Class) 3A for a reason. They're really tough, and needed to see some tough competition. We want to wrestle tough people to better ourselves, but when you do that we're going to take your lumps — and we did (Tuesday night).”
It will be a busy weekend for the Pirates. They will wrestle at 7 p.m. tonight at Quinton, then go to the Cushing Tournament Friday and Saturday.
“This is probably going to be the toughest tournament we're going to be in all year, even tougher than state,” Barbee said about the two-day tournament in Cushing.
