Poteau youth wrestler earns certificate for Academic All-State

January 14, 2012

Landon Thornburg

Landon Thornburg, age 6, was awarded a certificate of Governor's Commendation for Oklahoma Youth Wrestling Academic All-State during last weekend's United States Junior Open Championships at Oklahoma City's Cox Convention Center.
Thornburg, the son of Jason and Ashley Thornburg and grandson of Kenny and Linda Newman, had to have a grade-point average of 3.8 or higher as well as have completed a community service project.
To be considered for the award, Thornburg had to place in two of three tournaments — and he ended up placing in all of them, first in the series points, runner-up at state and fourth in the USJOC. For his community service, he has been picking up trash for the last several weeks in Poteau.
On the mat, Thornburg had a 50-11 record this past season by wrestling in Division I (ages 6 and younger) at both 49 and 52 pounds. He got his top honor in series points by placing in tournaments throughout the season.
