For six LeFlore County high school basketball teams, they each find themselves three wins from an appearance in next week's state tournaments.
The Poteau Lady Pirates (Class 4A), the Spiro Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs (Class 3A), the Talihina Lady Golden Tigers (Class 2A), the Howe Lady Lions (Class 2A) and the Wister Wildcats (Class 2A) will begin what they each hope is a three-game winning streak this week which will culminate with area tournament consolation championships — and, more importantly, trips to next week's state tournaments.
The Lady Pirates will meet the Jay Lady Bulldogs at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon in the Class 4A Area Tournament at the Muskogee Civic Center.
The Poteau-Jay winner will play the Muldrow-Roland winner at 1:30 p.m. Friday, with that victor playing the loser of Friday night's area title game between Fort Gibson and Idabel in the consolation championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. While the Fort Gibson-Idabel winner will advance to state as the area champion, Saturday night's winner will also advance to state as consolation champion of the area tournament.
The other five teams must take similar paths if they wish to punch their tickets to state.
In the Class 3A Area Tournament at Fort Gibson, the Bulldogs will meet the Coalgate Wildcats at 3 p.m., with the winner meeting the winner of Thursday night's Hugo-Tulsa Victory Christian game at 3 p.m. Friday. Friday's winner will meet the loser of Friday night's area title game between Kansas and Keys (Park Hill) in the consolation championship game at 8 p.m. to qualify for next week's state tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs will begin what they hope is a three-game winning streak at the Class 3A Area Tournament with a 6:30 p.m. match-up against the Wilburton Lady Diggers tonight in Fort Gibson. Tonight's winner will meet the survivor of this afternoon's Sequoyah-Tahlequah/Keys (Park Hill) game at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Friday afternoon's winner will meet the loser of Friday night's area championship contest between Kansas and Salina at 8 p.m. Saturday for not only the consolation championship but a trip to state — which would be the second straight such journey for the Lady Bulldogs who reached the state quarterfinals in 2011.
The three Class 2A teams left will all be at the new Wilburton Gym for the Class 2A Area Tournament.
The Lady Golden Tigers will meet the Rattan Lady Rams at 1:30 p.m. this afternoon, while the Lady Lions will play Sallisaw-Central at 6:30 p.m. tonight.
It could be a rematch of this season's LeFlore County Tournament girls' title game if both local teams win. The Talihina-Rattan winner will face the Howe-Sallisaw/Central winner at 1:30 p.m. Friday, with the winner playing for the consolation championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of Friday night's area championship game between Oktaha (which beat Talihina in last weekend's regional title game in Warner) and Amber-Pocasset (which beat Howe in the regional championship in Ada). Saturday night's winner will also advance to state along with the Friday night's Oktaha-Amber/Pocasset winner.
The Wildcats will meet Porter Consolidated at 8 p.m. tonight at the new Wilburton Gym in the area tournament. The Wister-Porter Consolidated winner will meet the Summit Christian-Rattan winner at 3 p.m. Friday in the consolation semifinals. Friday's winner will meet the loser of Friday night's area title game between Oktaha and Haworth in the consolation finals at 8 p.m. Saturday for the right to advance to state, along with the Oktaha-Haworth winner.
