Reminiscing about driving Mrs. Ruby Pearson

November 15, 2012

AND THE WINNER IS ... — Mark Burnett shows one of his six fish he caught in a make-shift three-man tournament last week with Stan Stone and outdoor columnist Jody Adams. Burnett caught the most fish out of the three participating anglers. Photo submitted by Jody Adams

Back in the mid to late 1980s, I worked for Lucian Gassaway at Country Boy Furniture. I had many jobs because ol' Lucian owned a farm in Monroe, and I worked out there, too.
However, one of my favorite jobs was driving his mother-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Pearson, to the doctor, who was in Fort Smith, Ark., once a month. Now, she would schedule her doctor's appointment early in the morning so we could go eat lunch at Ming Gardens Chinese restaurant — by the way, I'm a Chinese and Vietnamese food junky! I just love it, and she and I would just have the greatest times in the little Chinese restaurant once a month, and I always looked forward to lunch together.
An Outing on Lake Tenkiller
One week ago, I went fishing with Stan Stone and Mark Burnett at Lake Tenkiller.
We only caught 10 fish because the wind was blowing so hard, but we had a wonderful time.
Mark won our little tournament with six of the 10 fish caught. Stan caught three of the other four, so you now know how many I caught — one — but it was the big bass winner.
We'll have to go back because I can't believe Mark beat me, and I have to defend my bass-fishing reputation.
Happy Thanksgiving.
Go Pokes, beat Texas Tech.
Save the world — recycle.
God bless our troops and veterans.
Have a great weekend.
