FORT GIBSON — I have never seen that many points scored in a football game as the amount of points the scoreboard saw here Friday night between the Poteau Pirates and the homestanding Fort Gibson Tigers, which was won by the Tigers 59-56.
Not even the triple-overtime thriller against Oologah several years ago could match Friday night's contest. I have never been to an 8-man football game, but from what I hear, that scoring pace approached that style of scoring. The pace was so fast that there were 17 different scoring plays in the game. The referee, told me that the teams were averaging a TD every 2:30 of the first half. I had trouble keeping up with the pace of the game. I had so many scoring sheets, that I was not able to give you the complete story last Friday night.
Both teams established that they could play strong offense.
Both teams had the same number of possessions. The difference of the game simply boiled down to the fact that the Fort Gipson Tigers were able to kick a 35-yard field goal in the waning seconds of the game, while the Poteau Pirates attempted to kick a 45-yard field goal which Blake Williams had plenty of leg but the kick was obviously wide right right from the start.
