CAMERON — After a thrilling start to Tuesday night's home openers for the Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion baseball team, it ended on a down note.
After the Riverdawgs outlasted Three Rivers 7-6 in eight innings in the first game of Tuesday night's twinbill, the visitors from Wagoner held off the locals 7-5 in Game 2.
In the opener, Spiro's Shane Thompson hit a deep shot into the hole at shortstop with two outs and teammate Zack Bean of Stilwell at third base. Three Rivers shortstop Hunter Harrison got to the ball, but by the time he got the throw over to first baseman Colton Strother, Thompson beat the play — and got the game-winning hit as Bean scored from third base to end the game.
“I hit it pretty good, and I was just trying to beat it out — and I did,” Thompson said about his game-winning hit.
The ’Dawgs, who were slated to play Wednesday night in Morris against Okmulgee, will hit the road again for a 2 p.m. Saturday doubleheader against the Oklahoma City Bulls at Dolese Park.
