Residents along Saw Mill Road near Wister soon may have an alternative route for traveling to and from their homes.
During Monday's county commissioner meeting, Farrell Cooper Mining representative Tom Gilbert spoke to the commissioners about plans to create a temporary detour during an upcoming mining operation.
According to Gilbert, a detour around a portion of the county road near the Old Bennett Saw Mill will be created as the company mines where the existing road is located east of the mine operations. Gilbert said when the operation is concluded, the company will follow with reclamation action and rebuild the road. The new road is expected to be placed slightly south of the current location and will be completed to the existing four-way stop near the mine.
In other actions, the commissioners appointed Danielle Dedmond to the LeFlore County Hospital Authority Board. The commissioners also have had the removal an old bridge recently retired after a new bridge was constructed nearby taken off their to-do list. The Gene Heavener family who owns a 226-acre farm near the Big Creek bridge south of Heavener has asked to adopt the bridge. The removal of the bridge would be the family's responsibility as well as the reconstruction at their farm. According to the commissioners, the farm becomes inaccessible in heavy rains and the family intends to construct the bridge as a crossing to guarantee access to their land regardless of rain amounts.
The commissioners agreed unanimously to allow them to adopt the bridge.
