A rough way for 2011 LeFlore County football season to end

November 19, 2011

The 2011 LeFlore County high school football season end in a rough way on Nov. 11. The county had two teams, the Heavener Wolves in Class 2A and the Arkoma Mustangs in Class C.
Unfortunately for both teams, it was a one-and-done trip to the postseason as the Wolves lost 47-7 in Stroud to Class 2A's third-ranked Tigers, while the eighth-ranked Mustangs suffered a 54-8 loss to No. 6 Covington-Douglas.
But as I reflect on the 2011 LeFlore County high school football season, there will be a lot of things which stand out.
First, the Arkoma Mustangs set a school record for number of wins (nine) and having a home playoff game.
The Heavener Wolves returned to postseason play after a few years absence.
The Panama Razorbacks snapped a 17-game losing streak as they defeated their archrivals, the Pocola Indians. It set up quite a little battle down the stretch among the county's District 2A-6 teams. As of Week 9, all four — Heavener, Panama, Pocola and Talihina — were vying for the final playoff spot from the district. After Panama beat Pocola, Heavener then beat both Panama and Pocola (the latter in a strong second-half rally) to snatch the postseason bid.
Lastly, the Poteau Pirates gave most fans some entertaining moments with their no-huddle offense, which helped senior quarterback Wilson Klutts become the school's all-time leading passer and the top passer in Class 4A in 2011. It also allowed senior receivers Blake Roley and Jesse Woodson and sophomore receiver Jace Pitchford to be among the state's best in Class 4A.
What does 2012 have in store? There will be some new-look districts for our county teams, a move up to Class 3A for Heavener and a drop down to Class A for Talihina. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.
But for now, while our county football teams are gearing up for off-season workouts, I get to move on to high school and college basketball as well as high school wrestling. Don't you just love how there's not much, if any, time off between sports seasons? But hey, it keeps me out of trouble!
