School board discusses social media, other issues

January 15, 2013

The Poteau Board of Education tackled several current social issues at Monday night's meeting.
Members agreed to develop a written policy that clearly acceptable social media behavior for district employees, especially concerning online contact with students.
They also agreed to become part of a research project with the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center to identify young pupils with autistic tendencies and develop ways to serve those children better.
The board also approved deal with School Connect to expand automated notification for parents and staff via smart phones. Superintendent Don Sjoberg said eventually the automatic notification system would be expanded to include land lines and cell phones.
In other business, the board voted to extend Sjoberg's employment for another year with a 1.5 percent cost-of-living increase and three more vacation days.
