The second annual Poteau Pirate Invitational cross country meet will be Saturday at the Poteau Area Recreational Complex.
Just as last year, there will be an open 5K run and a fun walk/run beginning at 8 p.m. The entry fee is $20 per runner with a limit of 50. Registration will begin at approximately 7:30 a.m.
Then, beginning at approximately 9 a.m. will begin the actual cross country meet.
In just two short years, the number of teams has grown.
“We've got Idabel, Haworth, Stilwell and Sallisaw,” Poteau Coach Tim Hall said. “Quinton is coming this year. We have a school coming from Springdale, Ark. It will be a good race. We're looking forward to it.”
One of the goals behind the meet being formed was to provide at least one home meet for the runners, and a chance for their families and friends to come see them perform.
“In cross country, we have to travel quite a bit to find races,” Hall said. “This gives the families a chance to come watch their kids run here in Poteau.”
The same will hold true for the Heavener Wolves and Lady Wolves, who are also going to be part of the field of teams in Saturday morning's meet. While the Heavener teams will not have an official home meet this season, running at the PARC will be the next best thing.
The Heavener runners will enter coming off their strongest outing of the season to this point. The Lady Wolves won the Henryetta Invitational last Saturday, while the Wolves were third.
