When the Poteau Pirates snapped their two-game football losing streak last Thursday night at Costner Stadium with their 41-21 victory over former Poteau assistant coach Rob Johnson and his Muldrow Bulldogs, it kept the Pirates' postseason aspirations alive.
“It was pretty big,” senior defensive end Dylan Stone said about the victory. "We had lost over the previous couple of weeks. We needed that win real bad. It's gotten us up and ready for this week.”
This week's game against the Broken Bow Savages at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Memorial Stadium is important for two reasons. First off, there's Poteau's playoff life at stake.
“It would mean a lot,” Stone said. “Coach [Greg Werner, Poteau's first-year coach] has been saying all this week that this team — and the whole town — needs a win this week. If we can do that, then go beat Tulsa Rogers and make the playoffs, that would be a great achievement — since it's been a while for us [to make the playoffs]. There's definitely pressure because we have to win out, and it's coach Werner's old team. There's that thing going.”
