For the 14 senior players, they got to do something Friday night they had probably only dreamed of doing — play in a Class 4A playoff game. They did just that, beating Cleveland 48-7 in the opening round of the playoffs.
“It was a great feeling,” senior lineman Stephen Smith said. “We worked really hard for the win. We played to the top of our game. It felt good coming out with a win.”
It was also a great feeling just to be in an 11th game, and now what will be a 12th game this Friday night when the Pirates (10-1) entertain the Clinton Red Tornadoes (8-3) in the state quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m. at Costner Stadium.
“It was crazy,” senior lineman Daylon Brewton said. “We've worked so hard for this. Coach [Greg Werner] has really turned this program around. We're proud of everybody. We're just proud of the whole team.”
