Softball, baseball diamonds about ready to be filled with action; Panama Scrimmage Festival set to start Thursday, ends the following Saturday

August 2, 2013

Can you believe that the 2013 fast-pitch softball and fall baseball seasons are just about here — as is the start of football practice? It all starts Aug. 13 for most, with the exception of the teams playing in the inaugural Pocola Tournament — which will start Aug. 12, and its bracket will appear in next Saturday's edition.
To get warmed up for the softball action, the annual Panama Lady Back Scrimmage Festival will begin Thursday and end next Saturday, and I'll have the schedule listed at the end of this column.
As I have done the last two years, I'm going to use this event as a way to help me prepare the 2013 Fall Diamond Tab, which will come out Aug. 24.
I will take team photographs, so it would be appreciated if you local teams can wear your uniforms — or at least your uniform tops (like the Lady Razorbacks did last year) so I can take your team photographs.
I also will give you local coaches your respective questionnaires on Thursday to fill out overnight and bring back with you on Friday — ALONG WITH YOUR SCHEDULE — and I'll pick them up so I can start getting a start on my Fall Diamond Tab duties.
For you softball teams who won't be there, as well as you fall baseball teams, I will need to get your team photographs in all likelihood taken by a parent or coach and e-mailed to me at with everyone identified from left to right on each row.
I will mail out those coaches' questionnaires who won't be at Panama next week for you to fill out and return ALONG WITH YOUR SCHEDULE.
Although I wish summer break would last longer, I must admit I'm anxious to get the ball rolling — no pun intended — for this upcoming athletic season. I know there are a lot of question marks with some teams, while others could very well be loaded to make a deep post-season run.
