What Poteau sophomore runinng back Roger Barcheers has done his first two years has been rather awesome, especially since he was the Freshman of the Year on the 2012 All-Arklahoma Football Team.
However, Barcheers was in the spotlight, somewhat that is, for his ability to hold the ball for Poteau senior place-kicker Jace Pitchford. Thanks to the right hold, Pitchford kicked the game-winning field goal with four seconds left to lift the Pirates to a 10-7 Class 4A state quarterfinal victory over defending state champion Clinton at Costner Stadium.
“When we were practicing before the game, I dropped like 2-of-8 [snaps from snapper Austiun Archey],” Barcheers said. “So, I was pretty scared. All that was going through my mind was to catch the ball and place it on the tee — because I knew Jace would put it through. I was relieved after I got the ball down, and then I was ecstatic after he made it.”

For fans not able to attend Saturday afternoon's game, they are asked to line Broadway from Baetz Home Center to Bud's to help send off the Pirates to McAlester for the big game beginning at 9 a.m. For fans going, they are urged to form a caravan behind the Pirates' bus as it leaves for McAlester.
