SPIRO — For Spiro Bulldog baseball seniors, this week was beginning to look more and more that it would not happen for them.
However, after coming up so close the last couple of seasons, the Bulldogs finally knocked the door down to the Class 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs will meet Verdigris at 6:30 p.m. tonight in the state quarterfinals at Edmond Memorial High School.
The ’Dogs beat a longtime nemesis to win last weekend's Class 3A Regional Tournament, the Eufaula Ironheads.
“I was just overwhelmed,” senior Slater Dunn said about beating the Ironheads Saturday afternoon to earn the trip to state. “Tears of joy came to my eyes. I was just so excited. I really can't put it into words.”
Now, that the Bulldogs are there, one senior believes the team has now come full circle.
“It's been a long time coming,” Joe T. Ross said. “We've been chasing that (trip to state) for the past three years now. I think this year we finally figured out that this year we're seniors. We had to show up and play ball. We knew we could get past Eufaula, and get to where we wanted to be.”
Now that the ’Dogs are among the Elite 8, it's a great feeling.
“It feels really good,” senior Cameron Cole said. “We've proven now that we can make it. This is what Spiro needed.”
By 2 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, the Bulldogs could be hoisting the Class 3A State Championship trophy. All three seniors tried to describe what that moment would be like.
“I'm sure I'll be crying my eyes out,” Cole said. “I'd been rolling around in the grass (dogpile celebration). It would be unbelievable. I probably won't know how to handle (that moment).”
“That would be awesome,” Ross said. “The dogpile would probably last longer than our last one (celebrating Saturday afternoon's regional title victory). We'd all be excited and pumped up. It would be unbelievable. It would be the best feeling in the world. We can definitely do it.”
“It would be a dream come true,” Dunn said. “I don't know any other way to say it. To win state would just be amazing. It would cap everything that we've strived to do as Spiro Bulldogs.”
