SPIRO — The Spiro Bulldogs took the first step in reaching this year's Class 3A State Tournament. The Bulldogs swept the Heavener Wolves by scores of 14-2 and 18-8 to win the Class 3A District Tournament on Thursday.
The ’Dogs (19-10) will find out Monday where and who they will play in next week's Class 3A Regional Tournament.
The Wolves end the season at 7-14.
In the opener, the Bulldogs, who trailed 2-1 after two innings, put the game into run-rule status with a 13-run third inning — which was highlighted by Slater Dunn's seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot over the left-field fence, and Josh Woolly's RBI single, which ended the game by run rule.
In the nightcap, Spiro trailed 6-4 after three innings, but scored six runs in the fourth inning to take a 10-6 lead.
After the Wolves cut the deficit to 10-8 after four innings, the Bulldogs put the game away with a six-run fifth inning and a two-run sixth inning.
