Spiro football duo happy to be a part of All-State Game; QB Mitchem throws two TD passes as Hawkins does yeoman's job on the ground

August 2, 2011

SPIRO ALL-STATER — Spiro quarterback Clayton Mitchem rolls out to his right in preparation to make a pass attempt for the East All-Staters during Friday night's Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State Football Game at Broken Arrow High School's Tiger Memorial Stadium.

BROKEN ARROW — Last December when the 2011 All-State Football Game Roster was announced, two Spiro Bulldogs, quarterback Clayton Mitchem and running back Elliott Hawkins, were not on it — only listed as alternates.
But thanks to Tulsa Union's Kale Pearson and Tulsa Washington's Isaac Bennett could not make the game, Mitchem and Hawkins, respectively, were named as their replacements for the East team. Needless to say both Bulldogs were happy campers.
“It was exciting to get to play in the All-State Game,” Hawkins said. “I enjoyed playing with my teammates, and they were the best in the business. I had lots of fun.”
“I really felt the same way as Elliott,” Mitchem said. “I felt down when I wasn't picked, but I when I heard the good news, I just went all out for it. I had fun. It was good.”
