Spiro Mounds hosts 24th Family Kite Flite Day to celebrate Spring

March 11, 2013

Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center to host family kite flite day.

Come celebrate the end of Winter and beginning of Spring at the 24th Annual Family Kite Flite Day at the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center. The Kite Flite Day will be held from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, 2011. Normally there is an entry fee to the site but this will be a Free Day although donations are appreciated. It will be a great day for families and folks of all ages.
Each year since 1987, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center has hosted a day of spring fun and learning. Each year over 400 individuals and families bring lawn chairs, blankets, kids and kites and fly the winds along with fancier kites flown by "Professional" kiters. Demonstrations by kiters from Oklahoma and Arkansas will include stunt kites, parafoils and other fancy kites. There will be donated kites given away by drawing throughout the day.
Along with the kite flying, younger kids can have fun in the children area. There will be a sandbox where children can dig in the sand for shells, jewels, coins and even a special token that can be turned in for a kite. There will also be a bubble making area, which always draws a crowd.
Along with all the other fun, there will be vendors who will have Arts and Crafts and other things for sell. There will also be some food vendors and the grounds are perfect for a family picnic.
The Oklahoma Historical Society, the Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center and the Spiro Mounds Development Association with help from the Fort Coffee Fire Department and the Scout Troops of Spiro sponsor this event. The Spiro Mounds Archaeological Center is located 3 miles east of Spiro, Oklahoma on highway 9/271 and 4 miles north on Lock and Dam Road. For further information, please call Dennis Peterson at 918-962-2062."
