Spiro in must-win situation Thursday night at Valliant

October 19, 2011

The Spiro Bulldogs made it all the way to the Class 3A state quarterfinals a season ago. If they want to even think about postseason play this season, they must win out.
The first of those games for Spiro (3-4, 2-2 in District 3A-8) will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the road against Valliant (5-2, 2-2) in a battle of Bulldogs.
Spiro lost 34-18 to the district-leading Seminole Chieftains last week at McClain Stadium. It was a game in which the ’Dogs were their own worse enemy.
“The first quarter, we didn't come out well,” Spiro Coach Chris Bunch said. “We held them and forced them to punt, but we fumbled the punt. They got the ball inside the (Spiro) 30, and they got a short field and scored. We got the ball back, and we fumbled again at the (Spiro) 34. And they scored on that short field. We spotted them 14 points. After that, we did OK. We made it a 20-12 game at halftime, and we felt like we were in the game. But we came out in the third quarter, and gave up another easy touchdown, and it was downhill from there. It was one of those games where we felt like we killed ourselves.”
