SPIRO — Things were not looking good for the defending LeFlore County Baseball Tournament champion Spiro Bulldogs Wednesday night. They trailed for 95 percent of their winner's-bracket semifinal against the Cameron Yellowjackets, but then came the big hit.
Colby Demato, who had been hitless through his first three at-bats, smoked a solid single over the center fielder's head in the bottom of the eighth inning as the ’Dogs capped a come-from-behind victory with a 4-3 win over the ’Jackets in a game which ended at 10:45 p.m.
The Bulldogs were to get their second shot at the Wister Wildcats this season in Thursday night's winner's-bracket final for the right to play for tonight's championship at 7 p.m. Spiro beat Wister in last year's title game, but the ‘Cats, who beat Poteau 6-3 in Wednesday's other winner's-bracket semifinal, blanked the ’Dogs 2-0 on March 26 in Wister when Tyler Gibson outdueled Tyler Didway.
Two other county teams, the Pocola Indians and the Panama Razorbacks, stayed alive for at least one more day.
The Indians outlasted the Leflore Savages 6-5, then the Hogs not only had to win once but twice to keep their title hopes alive. Panama run ruled the Howe Lions 14-4, then did the same to the Heavener Wolves 15-7.
Poteau played Panama and Pocola faced Cameron in loser's-bracket contests Thursday afternoon, then the winners met to eliminate one more team with the winner making it to today's loser's-bracket final at 5 p.m.
