SPIRO — For two of the three seniors on the Spiro Lady Bulldogs basketball team, Sarika Willis and Philicea Mack, they were freshmen when the Lady Bulldogs made state in 2011 under then first-year coach Kayla Carrington, a.k.a., “Coach K.” They lost in the state quarterfinals. Now that they're seniors, Willis is hoping the state trip three years ago will help pay off this week at the Class 3A State Tournament.
“The atmosphere is a lot different, that's for sure,” Willis said. “There's more fans than what we've ever played in front of. The gyms are different. We had never played those rims before.”
The Lady Bulldogs, who will play undefeated Washington in the state quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Thursday at Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, earned their trip to state with a 50-47 win over Kansas in the Class 3A Area Tournament consolation finals Saturday night in Collinsville.
