SPIRO — All the Spiro Bulldogs had to do last week was beat the Checotah Wildcats on their own Ogle Field grass, and the ‘Dogs would have had a nine-game winning streak — and be the District 3A-8 champions. None of that happened as the ’Cats won 43-28, and knocked the Bulldogs into the No. 3 seed — and a road playoff game at 7:30 tonight against the Hilldale Hornets in Muskogee.
“We kind of took Checotah lightly,” senior linebacker Cole McKinney said. “We had an eight-game winning streak, and we just didn't think they were as good as they were. They are a really good team. On defense, we just didn't line up right. We had missed assignments. We didn't do what we were supposed to do up front. Those were our main problems.”
Now, the Bulldogs (8-2) will try to begin a new streak against the Hornets (8-2). McKinney believes his team will be able to bounce back from last week's disappointing loss — as well as the ’Dogs beginning a new winning streak to get them to a state title.
“Hilldale is another very good team. We should be able to bounce back. They're not as big as Checotah was. I think this week we've practiced better than we did last week. I think we're actually more focused this week for Hilldale than we were last week for Checotah. I think another [winning streak] is in reach. We just have to come out with our heads on right and play. We can't take the easy way out.”
