State baseball — and camping, hunting with good friends
Tonight, the Wister Wildcats baseball team will play Oktaha in the Class 2A State Tournament at Oklahoma City's Dolese Park in the state quarterfinals. These boys are making their fifth straight trip to state. I would like to wish them the best of luck!— — —There were some hunters that fared pretty well during turkey hunting season. Russell Broussard spent 3.5 hours on a hunt before taking a nice bird last week. Nathan Janway took his daughter, Cheyann Smith, out on Saturday, and she shot a jake. Also fellow outdoor columnist Jerry Davidson and his friend, Don Barto, went to the “Show-Me State” of Missouri, and each got a turkey. Jerry's was 22 pounds with a four-inch beard, while Don's was 24 pounds with an 11.75-inch beard.I’m really glad they have sent me pictures. If you have some, it’s not too late to send them to me. My email address is at the end of my column.— — —I’ve got some information for hunters on baiting in the wildlife management areas. Next week, I will let everyone know who we need to contact about this issue.— — —The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's popular controlled hunts program is now open to online applicants. This program offers once-in-a-lifetime elk and antelope hunts, highly sought-after buck hunts and a range of other quality deer and turkey hunting opportunities through randomized drawings that only cost sportsmen $5 to enter.Opportunities offered through the program include hunts on department or other government-owned or managed lands where unrestricted hunting would pose safety concerns or where overharvest might occur. The online application process takes just a few minutes, and must be completed through the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation's website at www.wildlifedepartment.com.Applicants have until Tuesday to submit their applications. All applicants, including lifetime license holders, must pay the $5 application fee to enter the controlled hunts drawings. The fee is paid only once per person per year regardless of the number of categories entered. Applications are only offered online through a secure process that accepts applications once they have been filed correctly, and a print-out confirmation page is available for sportsmen to document their submitted application. There are just a few days left, so don’t delay!Have a great week!— — —Email questions or comments to email@example.com.
