The Talihina Golden Tigers had to make this week's Class 2A Area Tournament the hard way.
Cord Fitzgerald's buzzer-beating 3-point basket gave the Golden Tigers their only lead in the Class 2A Regional Tournament consolation finals as they beat the Hartshorne Miners 46-45 Saturday afternoon in Quinton. The win put them into the area tournament's consolation quarterfinals where they met county rival Pocola on Thursday afternoon at the Muskogee Civic Center, with the winner needing to win Friday afternoon and Saturday night to make state.
The same fate bit the Golden Tigers in the regional championship semifinals Thursday night in Canadian as Dale's Brandon Draper hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the Pirates beat the Golden Tigers 38-35.
The Golden Tigers bounced back with a 72-45 rout of the host Savages on Friday afternoon in Quinton.
The season ended, however, for the Lady Golden Tigers as they lost 49-41 to the host Lady Savages in the regional consolation finals Saturday afternoon in Quinton.
The Lady Golden Tigers suffered a 47-29 loss to the Dale Lady Pirates in the Class 2A Regional Tournament championship semifinals Thursday night in Canadian before bouncing back Friday afternoon with a 54-47 consolation semifinal victory over the Warner Lady Eagles.
