TALIHINA — Momentum seemingly was on the side of the Oktaha Tigers when Devon Fry's 3-point basket with 1.5 seconds left in regulation tied the score at 45-all to force overtime in the Class 2A Regional Tournament title game Saturday night on Chris Gillespie Court at Ray Henson Gymnasium.
However, in OT it was all Talihina as Alan Lockhart drained eight points, all from the free-throw line, as the Golden Tigers upset the Tigers 60-52 to claim the regional title in front of a frantic home crowd.
The Golden Tigers (18-11) will meet Preston, the team that they beat to win the 2011 Class 2A State Tournament, at 8 p.m. Friday at the Class 2A Area Tournament championship game at the Wilburton High School gym for the right to get to state. Should the Golden Tigers lose, they will still have a shot to make state by winning the consolation championship at 8 p.m. Saturday in Wilburton.
The news was not as good for the Lady Golden Tigers as they lost 48-39 to the Oktaha Lady Tigers in the regional title game, but they still made this week's Class 2A Area Tournament. The Lady Golden Tigers (18-8) will meet Silo at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Wilburton. They have to win that game, beat the Wewoka-Preston winner at 1:30 p.m. Friday and win the consolation championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday against the loser of Friday night's area championship game between Oktaha and Colbert (which is coached by former Talihina boys coach Chris Gillespie, who coached the Golden Tigers to the 2011 state title).
The season came to an end for the Panama Lady Razorbacks on Friday night with a consolation semifinal loss to the Savanna Lady Bulldogs by the score of 55-44. The Lady ’Backs end the season at 15-10.
