While the football season ended for LeFlore County two weeks ago and ending this weekend with the final three state title games being played, I'd be remiss if I didn't congratulate the Talihina Golden Tigers on a great run in the Class A playoffs.
After missing the playoffs last season, they got to the state quarterfinals before losing 43-24 to the Cashion Wildcats on Nov. 23 at Doc Robinson Stadium.
I know no team wants to lose its last game, but no need to hang your heads, Golden Tigers. You had a great season, and congratulations for it.
Talihina's playoff run capped what was a pretty darn good season for LeFlore County football. Four of the eight teams made the playoffs — Talihina, Panama, Pocola and Spiro. Panama's playoff berth came on the heels of enduring a 17-game losing streak, which ended last season. Pocola's postseason appearance came after a five-year drought of making the playoffs, and Spiro returned to the playoffs after, like Talihina, missing the season prior.
While not making the playoffs, high optimism returned to Poteau under new coach, Greg Werner. The Pirates enjoyed a winning season — and did win their final game, the regular-season finale against Tulsa Rogers.
The Heavener Wolves, under new coach Carl Lee's guidance, enjoyed its second five-win season.
So, let me say in this parting remark that I think football is alive and well once more in LeFlore County.
