The Talihina Golden Tigers football team cannot do any better than it has to this point of the 2012 season, winning all three games — including Thursday night's 28-17 win over the Sallisaw Black Diamonds junior varsity at Sallisaw's Perry F. Lattimore Stadium.
“We're glad to be 3-0,” said Kelly Gravitt, Talihina's coach. “Thursday was our first real test that we had. We had a battle for four quarters. At one point, it was 21-17 after they took the second-half kickoff and scored. Our kids answered and got a big win. It was like the Vian scrimmage (last month) in that they showed us some weaknesses that we're wrapping up this week. This week opens our district play. Being 3-0 doesn't mean anything. We're putting that behind us, and getting ready for district play.”
The Golden Tigers will put their 3-0 record on the line as they begin District A-6 play at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road against the Quinton Savages.
The Savages (2-1) won last week 30-14 on the road against the Pocola Indians. After winning their season opener 58-0 over the Tahlequah-Sequoyah JV, they lost their Week 2 game 21-13 to Wilburton.
It's been three years since the Golden Tigers and Savages have met, since they were not in the same district in 2010 or 2011.
“It's a big rivalry for us when we were in this district before,” Gravitt said. “They're as big as we are and fast as we are. Their skill players are very good, like we think ours are. It's going to come down to match-ups. They have some youth and inexperience. We're hoping to exploit that. We're ready to go take care of business and get our first district win.”
