Things didn't quite end the way we hoped this past weekend

May 15, 2012

LeFlore County had two baseball teams — the Wister Wildcats (Class 2A) and the Spiro Bulldogs (Class 3A) — represent us at this past weekend's state tournaments. The bad news was that either, or both, could not come home with the state championship trophy.
The ’Cats got beat by Silo in Friday night's state semifinals, while the ’Dogs suffered a state-quarterfinal loss to Verdigris Thursday night.
Both teams, though, deserve congratulations for making it to the state tournament — for Wister, it was its fifth straight trip to state dating back to the 2010 Class 2A Spring Baseball State Tournament.
College Signings
I do want to let baseball and softball coaches know that if any of your seniors will be signing letters of intent, and the same goes for other sports as well, if I can be notified of the signing within at least a 24-hour period, preferably a 48-hour period, I will likely be able to attend the signing and get the story of it into the next edition which is published.
Legion Baseball
The Eastern Oklahoma Riverdawgs Major American Legion team's final day of tryouts will take place at 5 p.m. this afternoon in Cameron.
The Riverdawgs' season will begin with the Trophy Case Tournament May 26-28 in Bartlesville.
2012 Fall Diamond Tab
I know, you all are saying the summer break is upon us, and you're talking about next fall already — and you'd be correct.
I just wanted to give you all a heads up that the 2012 Fall Diamond Tab, which is the special edition which will have the season preview stories for the county's fast-pitch softball teams and the fall baseball teams, is tentatively scheduled to be published Aug. 11.
Since teams will begin practicing on Aug. 1, that week and even possibly opening day of fall ball on Aug. 7, either yours truly or help from yearbook teachers and parents, I'll be requesting team photographs for the special section.
I know last fall, I went to the Panama Preseason Tournament and took three teams' photographs during that event to help me out.
I will mail out the questionnaires for the fall ball coaches to fill out and return to me with your respective assessment about your team so that it should be in your mailboxes at your school when you report on Aug. 1.
In Closing
With today's Diamond Notes Column, this will be the last one of the spring 2012 baseball and slow-pitch softball season. Let me say thank you to all the coaches, scorebook keepers and yearbook teachers who helped throughout the season enable yours truly to give our county teams the coverage they so much deserve. I know I'll be calling upon you all when fall ball rolls around in August.
Until then, may every pitch you throw be a strike and ball you hit be a home run. Have a great summer break, and this column will return Aug. 7 when the fall fast-pitch softball and baseball seasons begin.
