OKLAHOMA CITY — As the 2012-2013 National Basketball Season ended Wednesday night at Chesapeake Energy Arena, the Oklahoma City Thunder were honored as a banner was placed in the rafters for winning this season’s Northwest Division title.
However, since the Thunder had wrapped up the top seed out west for the playoffs which will begin this weekend, the regular-season finale didn’t see the Thunder team we’re accustomed to seeing.
With the top seed in the Western Conference already wrapped up several Thunder players were in suits and ties and on the bench to cheer on their teammates. Kevin Durant, Kevin Martin, Kendrick Perkins and Nick Collison did not play.
The Bucks were already locked into the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference and didn’t have much to play for either. Thus, in a truly meaningless game, the Bucks prevailed 95-89.
The Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers were still playing for that spot on the last day of the regular season. Utah lost, putting the Lakers in the playoffs. Then, LA defeated Houston to move up to the No. 7 spot.
That left James Harden and the Rockets facing his former team in the first round. Oklahoma City will entertain Houston, with Game 1 of the series beginning at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
