Thurman Dorey

Thurman Dorey, 101, of Poteau, died Saturday, Sept. 22, 2012, at his home in Poteau. Thurman was born Jan. 10, 1911, in Wichita, Kan., to Wilfred and Bertha (Woods) Dorey. He worked as a coal miner for 17 years and as a carpenter for 28 and a half years in the San Francisco Bay area and many other places. Thurman was a member of Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dora Ruth; son, Donald Dorey; brothers, Wilfred Jr. “Buster,” Herman and Leon Dorey; sisters, Ruth Fair, Dorothy White and Louise Walker.
Thurman was a loving father and grandfather. He loved to paint portraits. John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and Princess Diana were among his favorites.
Survivors include his sons and daughters-in-law, James and Sharon Dorey, Larry and Kacey Dorey of Poteau; grandchildren and their spouses, Natalie and Randell Newby of Yale, Mark and Staci Dorey of Denver, Colo., John Dorey of Pasadena, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Britni, Brooke, Joshua Newby, Christian and James Dorey, Collin Dorey; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bob and Wanda Dorey, Rob and Sue Dorey of Poteau, Leo Dorey of Roseville, Calif., Harrell and Barbara Dorey of Pinole, Calif., William (Bill) Dorey of Poteau; sister, Wilma White of Rio Linda, Calif.; other relatives and loved ones. 
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, Poteau, with Rev. Delbert Hodges and Randell Newby officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Joshua Newby, Hank Collins, Tony Collins, Bill Mooneyham, Billy Hammers and Charles Diedrich.
The family will visit with relatives and friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday at Evans and Miller Funeral Home, Poteau.
