Thursday's High School Baseball Roundup

April 25, 2014

FORT GIBSON — The Poteau Pirates baseball team split its first two games of the 2014 Fort Gibson Invitational, beating the Hilldale Hornets 4-3 but losing to the host Tigers 3-2.
In the win over the Hornets, the Pirates broke a 1-all tie with a two-run third inning for a 3-1 lead.
After Hilldale cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth inning, Poteau got that run back in the fifth for a 4-2 lead.
The Hornets got a run in the seventh inning, but their rally fell short.
In the loss to Fort Gibson, the Tigers had a three-run fourth inning to rally them to the come-from-behind victory after the Pirates scored twice in the opening frame.
Clayton 5, Howe 4; Wright City 12, Howe 2: In the Class A District Tournament in Wright City, the season ended for the Lions with the two losses.
In the loss to Clayton, the Lions, who trailed 5-1 after five innings, scored once in the sixth inning and twice in the seventh on Stephen Helmandollar's two-run single to cut the deficit to 5-4. Helmandollar then stole second and third bases to be just 90 feet away from scoring the game-tying run, but he was stranded there.
In the loss to Wright City, the Lions committed six errors, making half of the Lumberjax's runs unearned.
Wright City had a 3-1 lead after an inning, then put the game away with a four-run second for a 7-1 lead after two innings.
Editor's note: Leflore's title games in the Class B District Tournament against Buffalo Valley had to be pushed back from Friday to this afternoon due to lack of umpires. The title game will be at noon, with the if-game at 2 p.m. The Savages must win both games to be district champions.
