Thursday's High School Scrimmage Roundup

August 27, 2011

BROKEN ARROW — If Arkoma Mustangs Football Coach Mark Weatherton would have handed out a grade to his team in Thursday night's four-way scrimmage against host Summit Christian, Dewar and Welch, he likely would have awarded his squad an “A.”
“I'm very pleased with the way we played,” Weatherton said. “We went down there against three Class B teams, and we competed well. Welch is really good, and we stuck right with them.”
Each team went 10 minutes on offense and 10 minutes on defense against the other three teams.
The scores against Dewar came when Tyler Sweeten caught a 5-yard swing pass from Christian Davis, and later catching a 30-yard pass from Tanner Steward.
The Davis-Sweeten tandem hit paydirt against the host team, as they connected on a 35-yard pass play.
Talihina Looks Better in Road Scrimmage against Hugo
One thing Talihina Coach Kelly Gravitt was wanting to see was how his team's defense would play after working for a week in the old ways of the 4-3 set. He liked what he saw.
“They were more confortable and more relaxed,” Gravitt said. “They looked like it was something they had done before. We flew to the ball a lot better. They tackled a lot better, but we did have some busts and that's what led to their score. But our defense was a lot better than it was last week. We just have to get better. We have to fix our busted assignments, but we're playing with guys who didn't see much action last year. As soon as we get our alignments fixed, we'll be all right.”
On offense, the Golden Tigers did something they didn't do in last week's home scrimmage against the Quinton Savages at Doc Robinson Stadium — score.
“We moved the football,” Gravitt said. “We were finally rewarded with a score (Austin Lawson's 2-yard touchdown run). We didn't score last week. But we had some busts in our quarterback reading game and we had some busts on our blocking. We need to stay on our blocks a lot longer, but that's what's going to happen because it is so early. They're all correctable mistakes.”
