Toothless in Poteau

April 5, 2013

ME AND LAYMAN “EVEL” GATTIS — Layman Gattis, 69, left, and outdoor columnist Jody Adams share a moment after racing at RaceDay Park Mx last Friday. Adams ended up blowing out a tooth during racing action after watching “Evel” Gattis make a 65-feet high jump. Photo by Sheila Tanguay

Last Friday, a group of motorcross riders went to RaceDay Park Mx to ride, since all our kids were out of school for Good Friday. It was a great day with perfect track conditions.
Now, I’m having a little problem with this little 65-feet high jump. I just can’t quite clear it yet. I always land short because I just don’t commit to it because it’s a long jump and, to be honest, I’m a little intimidated by it.
I’m riding on my third lap around the track, when I come to that dreaded 65-feet high jump. Lo and behold, here comes 69-year-old Layman Gattis, who passes me on one wheel, hits the jump and clears it without even slowing down — just like Evel Knievel.
I was in shock with my mouth wide open, so when I hit the jump and landed flat, I blew off my tooth! I swear that one of these days, I’m going to finally catch that old man!
Save the world, recycle.
God bless our troops and veterans.
Have a great weekend.
