PANAMA — The seeding held true on opening night of the 2013 LeFlore County Fast-Pitch Softball Tournament.
The top four seeds — No. 1 Poteau, No. 2 Pocola, No. 3 Panama and No. 4 Wister — all made it to Tuesday night's winner's-bracket semifinals.
In the winner's-bracket quarterfinals, the Lady Pirates blanked the Cameron Lady Yellowjackets 11-0, the Lady Indians rallied to down the Howe Lady Lions 5-2, the Lady Razorbacks beat the Spiro Lady Bulldogs 9-3 and the Lady Wildcats shut out the Heavener Lady Wolves 4-0.
In the opening round, the championship quarterfinal losers all posted victories. Cameron rallied to beat Talihina 4-2. Howe did likewise to earn a 9-3 come-from-behind win over Whitesboro. Heavener had little problem in beating Bokoshe 21-1 and Spiro blanked Arkoma 7-0.
Tuesday night's championship semifinals, at least on paper, should have given fans a crash course in pitching. The Poteau-Wister match-up pitted Lady Pirate senior ace RaeLynn Caldwell against Lady ‘Cat freshman Hunter Gibson, while the Pocola-Panama rivalry match-up had good pitching as well — Pocola's duo of Sarah Eddins and Sammie Kuhns and Panama's tandem of Hannah Goines and McKenzie Harper.
Tuesday night's semifinal losers played an elimination game immediately afterward to try to make the loser's-bracket semifinal at 5 p.m. Thursday.
The opening round of consolation play took place on Tuesday. One side of the bracket had Arkoma, Heavener, Whitesboro and Cameron, with the survivor facing the Pocola-Panama loser in one of the two final games of Tuesday night.
The other side of consolation play featured Talihina, Howe, Bokoshe and Spiro, with the lone team remaining on Tuesday night playing the Poteau-Wister loser.
The loser's-bracket final to decide third place will take place at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, followed by the championship game at 7:30 p.m. The if-game is slated for 8:45 p.m.
