Tulsa football team continues to look sharp

September 18, 2012

TULSA — After a tough season-opening loss Sept. 1 on the road against Iowa State, the Tulsa Golden Hurricane football team has made it 2-for-2 in home games, and both in dominating fashion.
After winning their home opener Sept. 8 against Tulane, the Golden Hurricane looked even more impressive in a 66-16 rout of the Nicholls State Colonels Saturday night at Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
There's nothing like setting the tone, and the Golden Hurricane (2-1) did so in a big way early. On the game's third play, Ja'Terian Douglas rambled 67 yards for a touchdown on a 75-yard drive which needed only 60 seconds to hit paydirt.
On Tulsa's next possession, on the opening snap, Douglas barrelled over a Nicholls State defender en route to a 73-yard carry, and only a Colonel player tripping him up at the Nicholls State 7-yard line kept him from two carries and two touchdown runs.
However, TU fans didn't have to wait long for a score. Two plays later, Alex Singleton took it in from a yard out to cap an 80-yard drive which took only 1:02.
“I'm very proud of our guys,” said Bill Blankenship, Tulsa's coach who is a Spiro native. “I felt like we got off to a fast start. Ja'Terian (Douglas) really set the tone for the night. The nice thing about J.T. is he's such a home-run guy. If you can just get him to the edge, he's pretty lethal. Our running backs are playing so well that they're giving us some big plays. That makes the game a lot easier to call. Overall, we felt good. Sometimes when you outmatch an opponent, and you get a fast start on them, it heads downhill pretty fast for that team — and I think that's what happened. I didn't want us to be sloppy. You don't want to play looking at the scoreboard. You want to play looking at your execution. I thought we hung in there pretty well. I think we were fairly efficient.”
