Two people were arrested Sunday after an argument took to the roadway resulting in a crash that injured one.
According to the Poteau Police accident report, Pedro Martines-Castañeda, 27, of Poteau was jailed after he lost control of his vehicle and struck a Poteau home.
Poteau officer Jody Thompson said he was driving south in the 700 block of North Saddler when Castañeda, who was driving a 2003 tan Chevy Avalanche pickup north, came around a corner at a high rate of speed. Thompson said the man lost control of his pickup and ran off the right side of the road, traveled 42 feet and struck a tree. Thomspon said the pickup then spun around and rolled onto the passenger side and struck a metal pillar at the home located at 704 N. Saddler.
Thompson said he had just gotten out of his police car to check on the driver of the pickup when he saw a silver Ford pickup speed around the curve and skid to a stop. Gidget Higgens, 22, of Poteau, identified as the driver of the Ford, said she was Castañeda's girlfriend.
Thompson said Castañeda attempted to leave the accident when Trooper Fernando Cardenas, who was assisting Thomspon, chased him down. Thompson said Higgens ran to Cardenas began striking the trooper. Thompson said he then arrested Higgens.
Higgens is facing not only charges of assault and battery on a police officer, but also obstruction of police and child endangerment after Thompson said Higgens' 3-year-old child was in the truck unrestrained.
Castañeda was jailed on charges of driving under the influence, driving in a manner not reasonable and proper, resisting arrest and driving without a valid license.
Both were being held without bail pending their first court appearance.
