UPDATE: Authorities in Latimer county have announced that both girls were located and safe around 6 p.m.
Tracy Lake of Talihina awoke this morning just a little after 5 a.m. She got up like every morning and went to make coffee. She then went to wake up her daughter, Mercedes, 14, and her neice Rheil-lee, 13, but the girls were no where to be found. That's when she noticed that her door was half open.
It was first believed that the two girls snuck out during the night to hang out with friends, but none of their friends have seen them.
Mercedes is a white female with long black hair that has blonde streaks and brown eyes. She is 5'6" tall and weighs approximately 125 pounds. She was believed to be carrying a zebra print back pack which according to her mother was found earlier today on Ponderosa Road in Talihina.
Rheil-lee is a white female with dirty blonde shoulder length hair and brown eyes. She is slightly shorter than Mercedes and weighs approximately 140 pounds. She was believed to be carrying a Black and Gray DC backpack and the DC is written in hot pink.
Lake said that Mercedes has a cell phone but it appears to be turned off. She said that authorities have attempted to locate the girls through the phone but AT&T said that the battery must be out of the phone because the GPS isn't working.
Because Lake and her daughter live less than a 1/4 mile from the county line, the Latimer County Sheriff's Department is investigating the matter. PDN was told that the Deputy working the case was unavailable and that the dispatcher didn't have any further details.
Mercedes Rogers is a student at Talihina Public Schools. Rheil-lee Maxwell attends Checotah Public Schools.
If you have any information regarding the whereabouts of these two girls please contact the Latimer County Sheriff's Department at 918-465-2161 or your local law enforcement agency.
Lake was not sure if the girls had been entered as missing or runaway in the national crime information center. PDN will continue to update the story as details emerge.
