Update - car drives throught living room at apartment complex

April 25, 2012

At approximately 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the Poteau Fire and Police Departments along with LeFlore County EMS were dispatched to the Poteau Valley Apartments on Windham Street in Poteau in response to a vehicle that had reportedly been driven through an apartment.
Rescue workers on the scene said that the white sedan was pulling into a parking space when the driver accidentally hit the accelerator instead of the brake, launching the car over the sidewalk and down an embankment into the living room of an apartment.
EMS Director David Grovdahl reported that three children were injured in the accident and that all three were transported to Sparks Regional Hospital in Fort Smith, Ark. Grovdahl stated that the children were in stable condition, suffering broken bones.
Poteau Police Officers Michael Jackson and Gary Hect reported that the driver of the car, 25 year old Jallow Fatoumatta, showed no sign of intoxication.
Officers Jackson and Hect also reported that one of the children injured in the accident was confined to a wheelchair at the time of the accident.
