Friday ended the weeklong Upward Basketball Camp, which took place at the Pansy Kidd Middle School Gym thanks to the Church of the Nazarene.
The event was basically a “Bible Basketball Camp.” Not only was sportsmanship and basketball fundamentals taught to the nearly 60 campers, but there was also devotion time present daily as well.
Upward Sports Unlimited is a nationwide organization that is the world's largest Christian sports league for children. It provides a fun kids sports experience based on healthy competition. Last year, nearly 550,000, ranging in ages from K5 students through sixth-graders, participated in such leagues as basketball, soccer, flag football and cheerleading. There are more than 5,000 leagues or camps in existance at this time.
Because of the strong showing at this week's camp, there are plans in the works to try to get an Upward Basketball League in Poteau/LeFlore County for next March. Things will try to get organized around the start of the 2012-13 school year.
