LeFlore County Commissioners designated the week of May 3 through 9 as Oklahoma Home and Community Education Week in LeFlore County.
LeFlore County Commissioners have proclaimed May 3 through 9 as Oklahoma Home and Community Education Week in LeFlore County. This special week is set aside annually to make the citizens more aware of the mission and presence of the Oklahoma Home and Community organization in our area. OHCE has a working relationship with Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service to help Oklahoma develop stronger families and communities. Their ultimate goal is to educate its members to be well-informed to handle change in their homes and communities. OHCE has changed its name several times since it began as the Oklahoma Home Demonstration Council in 1935. However, OHCE still emphasizes education of its members just as the Home Demonstration clubs did when they originally started meeting. Today’s topics still teach proper nutrition and safety but also deal with social situations such as planning family reunions and ways to “Go Green.” LeFlore County has four local groups who meet regularly in Cameron, Poteau, Stapp-Zoe, and Wister. Together there are more than 50 members. These groups serve as volunteers for various community service projects and sponsor the annual Leflore County Quilt Show. The 2009 Quilt Show will be held June 5 and 6 at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau. Any LeFlore County resident may enter a quilt in this show. There is also a Nine Patch Challenge block contest. This challenge is open to anyone who enters regardless of residence. Rules and entry forms are available at the LeFlore County OSU Extension office, located in the Courthouse Annex at 103 Church St. in Poteau. If you are interested in being a part of LeFlore County OHCE contact Jill Ward at the OSU Extension office at 918-647-8231. |
