Winners of the 5-Mile Cavanal Walk were (back) first place, Donnie Harris, (front, from left) second place, Ethan Ivy of Poteau and third place Bojana Dimitrov of Serbia.
Saturday’s weather conditions were not the best, unless you were a duck. The rainy conditions did not stop the best from coming out to walk the 5-mile Cavanal Killer. At 8:30 a.m. Mayor Jeff Shockley fired the starter pistol and approximately 183 people converged on the “World’s Highest Hill.” Walkers ranged in age from 70 to 7 with 238 people pre- registered for the walk. However, at the starting line the numbers resulted in 183 participants. The Poteau High School track team started off the event by leaving a few minutes early with a training run. The runners were exempt from any competition of the walk. Last year’s time was beaten by its own successor. The winner this year for the second time was Donnie Harris of Panama with a time of 1:02.55. Second place was Ethan Ivy of Poteau with a time of 1:04.37. Third Place went to Bojana Dimitrov, an international student athlete from Carl Albert State College from Serbia. Whitney Kirby came in with a close fourth place time of 1:06.40 Each participant received an “I Survived The Cavanal Killer” t-shirt and a sack lunch was waiting for them at the top. Local health care agencies helped with the checkpoints along the way giving out water and Gatorade. Health care volunteers were also available with first-aid and supplies, if needed. Karen Wages distributed bananas during the walk for those needing an extra boost. The second annual event will be recorded as a success in the Poteau Chamber of Commerce event books. Wages, Executive Director of the Poteau Chamber of Commerce, stated, "If we could do over 200 this year, then we expect 300 plus next year." All proceeds go to the Phase II project of Cavanal Hill. |
