Kiamichi Technology Center in Poteau was the recent recipient of a Foundation Scholarship from the Oklahoma CareerTech Foundation. The foundation supports student and teacher opportunities and successes throughout the state. Scholarships exist for students and teachers who wish to pursue or continue their education as well as those who wish to teach within the CareerTech system. Automotive Technology Instructor Keith Griffith was the recipient of the award this year and is very excited about the scholarship. This is Griffith's seventh year of teaching and is proud of the accomplishments his students have made. Last year he took four students to the state contest. The adult students finished in first and second places and the high school students brought home first and third place awards. “If students complete this program in two years they can get a job almost anywhere starting at at least $25,000 a year,” Griffith said. Students learn more technical skills now than they have in the past, stated Griffith. “We apply subjects such as science, physics, math and business in the curriculum now," the instructor explained. "We have a cooperative alliance with OSU Okmulgee and students who complete the program here can test out of some of their basic classes.” The program has began for the 2009-2010 school year with some 13th year scholarship students who wish to finish the program out of high school. The summer conference golf tournament is the foundation's annual fund-raiser. Proceeds from the tournament support the Teacher Recruitment/Retention Scholarship. |
