“We would like to express our gratitude to AES, Days Inn and the Poteau Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring and helping organize such a helpful event” stated Dan Boren’s Liaison Betty Ford.
Thursday morning an event helping veterans understand their rights and benefits was held at the Poteau Days Inn. Senator Jim Inhofe spoke at the event answering all questions presented to him. The event began with veterans meeting, signing in and speaking with qualified caseworkers that could help get them started on the necessary process to receive the benefits they deserve, followed by prayer, respects to the flag and speeches given from local veterans. Following the rousing words given by the former military members, Lundy Kiger of the AES Shady Point spoke about AES’s stance with the military and the purpose of the meeting. “AES provides its armed service employees and their families the same benefits they receive when are deployed so they don’t have to worry about their families having insurance and being taken care of” stated Kiger “Over 20 percent of our employees are veterans and we wanted to bring all the right people together in one place to help them get the right information and to show our appreciation to each and everyone who has served our country.” Veterans were given the chance to ask questions and express their concerns about the current benefit system. Ron Massey, Liason to Inhofe spoke and showed his gratitude to Poteau for starting this meeting that has expanded all over the state but he stated that Poteau still had the largest crowd. Ford also showed her gratitude to everyone for coming and she announced that they were looking at establishing a South East Oklahoma Outpatient VA Clinic in the area, possibly in McCurtain County. Ford also encourages veterans to use their office if they have any questions. Roy Griffin with the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Muskogee stated that “We have the number one term care in the United Stated for VA.” Along with being the best he revealed that a new law was passed and the details finally hashed out stating that 70 percent service connected veterans will get free care at their facilities. Inhofe finally spoke after lunch, that AES had catered in by Cakes and More, and stated that he was the second ranking member of the armed services committee and future chairman as well as the fact that he has served in the senate since his election in 1994 and he spent 10 years in the house. Inhofe spoke on numerous subjects but mainly how care for veterans is improving and how he will try and help it improve. Veterans and their spouses learned about their benefits and where Inhofe stands. If you would like more information on his platforms go to www.inhofe.senate.gov |
