A “We the People" rally, an open “Town Hall” for the citizens of LeFlore County will be held Sept. 15 at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center in Poteau, to celebrate America’s Constitution Week.
The rally will kick off at 7 p.m. with a short patriotic program featuring Wes Fowler, this year’s Oklahoma Star! Poteau winner, as well as other musical guests. Fowler will reprise his performance of “It’s America!” that won over the crowd at the recent Phil Gardenhire PRCA Rodeo. The music will be followed with a series of three minute speeches from local citizens on topics including current events, the Constitution and issues of freedom. Anyone who wants to sign up early to speak may do so by calling 918-647-9702. We have a few people on standby to speak but we hope that others who attend will be inspired to take the podium and have their say on whatever it is that inspires, motivates or worries them at the moment,” said Dave Jones, spokesman for the LeFlore County T.E.A. Party, the organization sponsoring of the event. “There are many today who believe that their voice is not being heard. This is a chance to be heard.” Organizers stress that this will be a non-partisan event aimed at teaching and celebrating the freedoms enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, while exploring how that founding document affects each and every American in his or her daily life. Considering the times in which we live, this is an important conversation we should be having among ourselves and with our children,” Jones said. “We invite parents to bring their children to the event, and we promise not to run too late on a school night.” Most Americans celebrate freedom around July 4, the birthday of the United States that commemorates the publishing of the Declaration of Independence But Sept. 17, 1987 is an equally important date as it is the anniversary of the conclusion of the Constitutional Congress 222 years ago. The Founding Fathers had completed the work of fashioning the framework of a Republic that even today safeguards our individual liberties. It is the Constitution that gives us the right to gather together without fear of government reprisal to discuss public issues,” Jones said. “We take that right for granted, but when you read headlines today where members of the Congress are denigrating citizen gatherings as ‘unpatriotic’ you begin to realize that maybe it’s time we begin to refresh our understanding of the precious freedoms which were handed to us by earlier generations.” The LeFlore County T.E.A. (Taxed Enough Already) Party is a voluntary association of LeFlore County citizens who seek to encourage citizen debate, understanding and participation in government and civic affairs. it is officially non-partisan and unaffiliated with any political party (although individual members may affiliate to their hearts' content). The Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center is located near the campus of Poteau High School on Stadium Drive. |
