Poteau Main Street is gearing up for the Kiamichi Outdoor Sportsman’s Festival this weekend.
The fun begins early Saturday with a bass tournament starting at 5:30 a.m. at Ward’s Landing in Wister with Poteau Daily News outdoors columnist Jody Adams in charge. There will be trophies and $250 cash prize sponsored by First National Bank.
When the bass tournament is over the boats and trucks will line up on Peters Street in downtown Poteau for a live weigh-in around 3 p.m. with Professional Angler Mark Goins as the emcee. Goins is also sponsoring the Casting for Kids Contest from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. with prizes and trophies being awarded.
An archery contest and a skeet shooting contest will be held at the Robert S. Kerr Airport in Poteau beginning at 10 a.m. Jerry Davidson will be conducting the free kids archery contest at the rifle range and David Robertson will be conducting free skeet shooting for anyone over the age of 10.
An adult archery contest is scheduled to begin at noon with an entry fee of $20. Trophies and prizes will be awarded for all archery contests.
Vendors will be lining the streets of Historic Downtown Poteau opening up at 10 a.m.
"We have had such a great response from area businesses who plan to set up," said Karla Ochoa, Main Street Director. "We will have a police car, an ambulance, and the fire truck with Sparky the Fire Dog for the kids to explore. A chainsaw artist will be conducting live shows as he carves wood."
Parents are urged to bring their children dressed in camo for the Cutest Camo Contest to be held on the stage in the Pocket Park downtown at 1 p.m. Trophies will be awarded.
There will also be a prize walk throughout the day for the kids to win stuffed animals and a chance to win a bicycles.
A girls bike is being sponsored by Peachtree Hospice and a boys bike is sponsored by The Lions Club.
Fishermen are invited to bring your boats in for a free safety check by Steve Scantling of the OHP Lake Patrol. Scantling will be set up across from the Poteau Post Office on Witte.
Want to know how to score your antlers?
Jeff Ford from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife will be downtown at 10 a.m. and noon for a demonstration.
Bob Campbell will also be on hand for those who would like to sign up for the next Oklahoma Concealed Weapons Class.
The fun continues in the afternoon on the stage in the Pocket Park. Be sure to bring a lawn chair and get ready for some great music. Silver Streak will be playing from 3 until 4:30 p.m. The Sumpter Band will take the stage between 5 and 6:45 p.m.
The trophies and awards will be presented from 7 until 7:30 p.m. followed by the Sound of Country with Earl Herron at 8 until 10 p.m.
But, it's not over until it's over. On Sunday morning the vendors will open at 11 a.m.
For those who may have missed the archery contest on Saturday, George Midgley will be downtown from 1 until 3 p.m. to conduct a beginning archery introduction.
For all the turkey lovers, there will be a Turkey Calling Contest at the First Christian Church on Witte. Jerry Davidson will be conducting the free contest for kids at 2 p.m. followed by the adult contest. The entry fee for adults is $20.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded for both contests.
Music will fill the air Sunday afternoon on stage beginning at 12:30 p.m. The Cavanal Chorale will perform at 2:30 p.m.
The winner of the four-wheeler will be announced at the close of the concert.
