SouthEast Oklahoma is horse country and soon a new type of horse adventure is coming to the area. The public is invited to be a part of history and participate in the first “Pony Express Race” to be held Oct. 31 and ride back into time as a “Pony Express Runner.”
This truly unique event will be located at the Talihina School Show Barn, on Railroad Street. Named for the famous mail delivery route started in 1860, race entries will demonstrate horseman skills by completing an obstacle course. Some of these obstacles may include, crossing a bridge, riding through a round bale ring, and relays. Riders will then race along a marked course to pick up mail from several downtown businesses. They will carry this mail with them as they head east out of town where riders will ride like the wind and cross scenic trails and creeks. Unlike the original Pony Express which was over 2,000 miles, the Talihina race will only be five miles long. Riders will complete the course and deliver the mail at the finish line. This event will be scored on points and time and the winners will receive cash prizes, determined by the number of registered riders. The event has three age categories, age 8 to 11 and ages 12 to 15 will have an obstacle course only event. Those age 15 and over can enter in the obstacle course and cross country race. Unlike the California ad, “Wanted, young, skinny, wiry fellows," all horse enthusiasts who have the needed skills to complete the course are wanted. Western attire is required and all horses must have negative coggins papers. A free lunch will he held for all contestants at approximately 3 p.m. with winners announced and prizes awarded. For more information or to get an entry form contact Talihina Main Street office at 567-2023 or Sandy James at 567-3407 or email at
