Above, these Poteau Elementary students must cross the make shift bridge to go from one building to the other. By Laura Young Managing Editor
What could be more miserable than sitting through class with soaked socks and wet feet because you had to forge the floods on your way to school? The recent rains that continue to pour from the skies have caused flooding in many parts of town. Some of the worst flooding in Poteau can be found at the Poteau Elementary School campuses. Recent rains have added a sense of urgency to the problem as students and teachers must cross in and out of the buildings on make shift bridges made of plywood and wooden pallets in an effort to save shoes and keep socks and feet dry. Major flooding occurrs on the sidewalks near the entrances of each building and along the sidewalk where the students walk to get to and from the buses. On rainy days many students come to class and/or go home with soaked feet. In an effort to fix this problem a large portion of funding from the proposed school bond issue will be used to improve the drainage around the elementary buildings and replace the broken and sunken sidewalks. The $2,235,000 Special Bond Election will be held Tuesday with polling places open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. There are 10 precincts included in the Poteau school district. Polling places are as follows: Cameron - 109 - Cameron School Shady Point - 111- Mike Mass Civic Center Wister (north) - 202 - Ellis Chapel Community Church Poteau - 203 - Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center Poteau - 204 - Trinity Baptist Church Poteau - 205 - Courthouse Annex Poteau - 207 - Freewill Baptist Church Poteau - 208 - First Baptist Church Gilmore - 209 - Double Branch Baptist Church Wister - 212 - Jim Turnipseed community Center If you are not sure if you live within the Poteau school distict, call the LeFlore County Election Board at 918-647-3701.
