How much would you pay to be able to wear a hat in school? These Wister students paid $5 a head for the honors. All money was donated tothe American Diabetes Association as a fund raiser.

A Walk for Diabetes will be held Saturday in Poteau at the high school track. Students from Wister, Poteau and Monroe schools organized walk to be held Saturday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Costner Stadium in Poteau. A 5K Run/Walk will be held at Wister School with approximately a dozen participants already registered. More than 170 people are registered to participate in the walk Saturday evening. All money raised will be donated to the American Diabetes Association. Deedra McMillin of Wister Schools and Alicia Hoffman of Poteau Schools encourage everyone to come out to the track to support the walkers and enjoy local DJ talent Casey Covey from Lazy C Sounds. Door prizes will be given away as well as a drawing for an iPod Shuffle donated byWister Simple Simons; a $25 gift card to Jazzy Jewels; Myers and Sonic coupons; a Myrle Norman gift basket; tickets from Poteau Theatre; and Onyx Shop coupons. T-shirts will also be provided to all walkers donated by Central National Bank, The Community State Bank, Watson Motors, Mac-Stone, Lemmings Insurance, Wister Dugout, Tote-A-Poke and Lazy C Sounds. Panama Marvins IGA and Linda Walden donated water. McMillin would like everyone to come cheer everyone on. Donations are welcome at the event. Wister schools conducted a fund raiser this week to help raise money. The teachers paid $5 each to have the privilege of wearing jeans when they wanted this week and the students paid 50 cents to wear hats in class. "We had nearly all of the teachers pay to wear jeans and many of them paid to wear a hat, too,” stated McMillin. The event will be a good time helping out people in the community.
